Victorians selected for Under-20 and Ivor Burge referee duties

FOUR Victorians will be on the other side of the whistle for the upcoming Helloworld Australian Under-20 and Ivor Burge Junior Championships, held in Bendigo from 12 to 18 February.

Jarrad Zappone, Bianca Vernon, Bianca Dunshore and Gary Robertson have been picked to be part of the Australian Junior Championships on the back of some exceptional recent refereeing.

Bianca Vernon, from the Southern Peninsula branch, has been part of the junior championships refereeing roster since 2014 and will add her second under-18 appointment to her resume. The Southern Peninsula official refereed the under-18 women’s gold medal match at last year’s games in Forrestville, South Australia.

“I’m honored to be selected for the opportunity to represent Basketball Victoria Country at the up and coming U20 Australian Junior Championships,” Vernon said. “With selection comes great responsibility to perform at my best and bring home what I learn and adapt it into my refereeing throughout the year.

“I’m excited to learnt a lot and improve my refereeing on many different levels both physically and mentally.

“Being involved in an elite level championships like AJC is challenging but very rewarding. It is a great stepping stone for my development in future refereeing endeavors.”

Zappone was awarded the Les Dick Award as the VBRA’s Metro U23 Male Referee of the Year in 2014. The Mill Park referee has been a part of the national championships refereeing panel since 2013, most recently refereeing the under-18 bronze medal match at the 2016 tournament as well as the gold medal women’s match at the 2015 under-16 championships.

Bianca Dunshore has also been selected as an emergency referee for the championships on the back of her recent appintments at the under-16s in Geelong in 2014 and the 2013 under-15s in Ballarat where she refereeing in the Gold Medal Championship match.

Geelong’s Gary Robertson rounds out the officials selected for the Bendigo-based championships as he will stand as the Ivor Burge Assistant Commissioner for the tournament.

Referee development is just as important to Basketball Victoria and Basketball Victoria Country as is the growth and improvement of our athletes and coaches. Without the referees, we don’t have a game and as such need to constantly expand and improve the referee community throughout the state.
